Museum Size 18” Crinoid Deep Sea Lily Morocco 440 Million Years Fossil, Mounted on Stand
An amazing museum size Crinoid plate with “sea lilies” mounted on an acrylic stand. It’s from Morocco which are believed to be at least 440 million years old.
Crinoids look like “Sea Lilies” their common name. They are fossil animals, not plants. Per Wikipedia: Crinoid comes from the Greek word krinon, “a lily”, and eidos, “form” and lived in both shallow water and in depths up to 20,000 feet.
Dr. Robert Ballard- even found a related modern species (tube worms) feeding in the deepest darkest depths of ocean trenches. If you remember the TV show, they feed off the microscopic organisms that consumed very toxic chemicals in the deep ocean boiling water vents. Truly amazing animals that needed no sunlight as a direct or indirect energy source.
